Job Summary Perform a variety of tasks that vary in complexity and difficulty based on the type of vehicle/equipment such as automotive, light/medium/heavy-duty diesel trucks, Fire apparatuses, heavy construction equipment such as cranes, dozers, excavators, loaders, pavers, rollers and farm/agricultural equipment as well as small equipment like motorcycles, ATV/UTV, boats, power generation and electrical golf carts, light/messaging equipment. Jobs, such as maintenance inspections and light repairs involve minor adjustments, testing, measuring and/or replacement of parts and components. Major repairs involve recondition and replace parts such as axles, pistons, bearing, gears, seals, valves, bushings and pumps using engine lathes, press machines, various tools and precision measuring instruments, replacement may require disassembly and/or reassembly of the engine, transmission, differential or hydraulic components. Must be able to work during weather-related emergencies and be available to stay at one location for an undetermined amount of time. Attendance and punctuality is an essential function of this position. Principle Duties and Responsibilities Typically reports to a supervisor or manager and considered essential personnel Familiar with a variety of complex shop and field concepts, practices and procedures within Fleet Services operation Typically exercises independent experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals and objectives Performs a variety of complex and difficult fleet services related task May lead and guide work of others A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected Has certain limited purchasing authority Primary job functions/tasks do not typically require exercising independent judgment Duties Adjust and align wheels, torque bolts and screws and attach system components Diagnose and identify malfunctions using computerized diagnostic tools and equipment Disassemble and reassemble vehicle/equipment parts and components Disassemble and reassemble major heavy equipment components or making adjustments through onboard computer programs Discuss vehicle/equipment issues, maintenance plans and work performed with customers Follow checklist to ensure that all critical parts and components are examined Identify mechanical and electrical problems, often using computerized diagnostic equipment Inspect, repair and replace defective or warn parts such as bearings, pistons and gears Records inspections, test results, work performed and parts used in Fleet Information Systems (Faster) Overhaul and test major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulics and electric systems Perform routine/scheduled maintenance including oil changes, inspections, tune-ups, tire rotations, and checking batteries and lubricating parts/components Raise trucks and heavy parts or equipment by using hydraulic, pneumatic or electric jacks or hoists Read and interpret diagnostic test results, often by using dials, gauges and other mechanical/computer equipment Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, schematics and technical drawings Repair or replace worn parts and components such as, brake pad, brake rotors and wheel bearings Retrofit engines with emission control systems to meet EPA regulations Test and inspect engines for malfunctioning parts or components Test drive/operate to diagnose malfunctions and to ensure smooth operations, after repairs and maintenance service Test parts, components, systems and subsystems to ensure that they are working properly Travel to worksites to repair large equipment such as excavators, dozers, cranes & generators Extensive knowledge of Fleet Management System (Faster) logging in and out of work orders, changing statuses, charging parts, putting in notes all in a timely manner Tech III usually works more of the heavy trucks & equipment, also working closely with the Fire Department & Foreman on coordinating Fire Apparatuses work flow to limit the down time Data collection (parts, labor, sublet) for the purpose of quote writing Tech III might be required to write a customer quote Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proper tire repair procedures specifically related to pursuit vehicles Basic knowledge of workplace health and safety practices Basic theories, practices, tools, parts, diagnostic equipment and materials necessary for the effective maintenance and repair of fleet units. Ensure safe and effective handling of toxic substances to ensure environmental compliance Ensure safe operating techniques and the occupational hazards of motorized, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment operation, as well as electrically energized automotive tools, components and servicing equipment Extensive knowledge of computer controls and growing number of electronic systems and sensors Knowledge of varied types of generators including diesel and propane powered systems nomenclature, preventive and corrective maintenance approaches, as well as safety procedures relating to lock-out, tag-out and high voltage generation Propulsion precautions, design and layout of welding and fabrication to ensure high levels of quality and integrity in fleet maintenance and repair Safe handling of chemicals associated with fleet repair, parts and various systems (fuel, brake, cooling systems, etc.) cleaning solvents and lubricants Safety practices and regulations for operating mechanical and electrical equipment Diagnose malfunctions through the utilization of advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment of varied types and manufacturers Highly skilled in use of computerized tuning/diagnostics Moderate skills in use of desktop/personal computer systems Read and interpret manufacturer schematics and vendor diagrams, manuals and specifications to complete installation and repair of complex fleet and heavy equipment related parts and systems Repair malfunctions of fleet equipment and systems, including engine and drive systems, fuel, electrical, cooling, suspension, chassis and safety appliances, refrigerant recovery and recycling requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency Use and maintain automotive tools and equipment utilized in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and diagnostics Use strategies to diagnose the source and the extent of the problem Attention to detail. Mechanical and electronic malfunctions often are dune to misalignments or other errors. Technicians must therefore account for those problems when inspecting or repairing engines and/or components. Customer-service skills. Fleet technicians frequently talk to their customers about automotive/equipment problems and work that they have planned, started, or completed. They must be courteous, good listeners, and ready to answer customers' questions. Technicians need a steady hand and good hand-and-eye coordination for many tasks, such as disassembling engine parts, connecting or attaching components, or using hand tools. Mechanical skills. Must be familiar with parts and components of engines, transmissions, braking mechanisms, and other complex systems. Must also be able to disassemble, work on, and reassemble parts and machinery. Physical strength. Technicians must often lift or move heavy equipment, parts and tools without risking injury or fatigue. Technical skills. Modern engines and transmissions rely heavily on electronic systems to function. Fleet technicians must be familiar with how the electronic systems operate and with the tools needed to work on them. Troubleshooting skills. Fleet technicians must be able to identify mechanical and electronic problems, make repairs, and offer a proper maintenance strategy. Education, Certification and Experience Required completion of formal training in a postsecondary institution/training program or ten (10) years fleet experience Required two (2) Current Master ASE in Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or Transit or EVT and seven (7) years' experience Required Certification from MACS Mobile Air Conditioning Society in Freon installation, automotive air conditioning and emissions (including ASE 609, Refrigerant recycling and service procedures) Required Class B CDL State of Texas (Must be obtained within six (12) months of employment or attainment of position as a condition of continued employment with Fleet Services) Required Safety and Emissions Certification from State of Texas (Must be obtained within six (6) months of employment or attainment of position as a condition of continued employment with Fleet Services) Machines, Tools Equipment and Work Aides Computer, printer, scanner, calculator, Computer software: Faster Fleet, Access, Word, Excel, Workforce, Emissions analyzer, Mitchel & various web applications.
