Meter Reader Technician

The City of Friendswood is currently accepting applications for a full-time Meter Technician , in the Public Works Department . This position will read and maintain water meters, connect and disconnect water service, which ensures proper billing and customer satisfaction. WORK PERFORMED: Walks or drives truck over established route and takes readings of water meters daily. Completes work orders, which includes meter leaks, new connects, finals, re-reads, and customer communication notices. Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections. Turns service off for non-payment of charges in vacant premises, or on for new occupants. Troubleshoots and repairs AMI hardware for continued communication. Maintains meters by changing out meters, raising meters, installing, or replacing meter boxes, installing or replacing meter box lids, repairing minor gasket leaks. Replacement of curbstops, meter tails, and service line repairs. Indicates irregularities on forms for necessary action by servicing department. Trains new personnel to read meters and maintain meters and associated AMI hardware. Perform other duties within the area of responsibility and ability as assigned. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or G.E.D. 0-3 years of similar or related experience Experience working for a City, County or State is preferred. Experience reading and maintaining water meters preferred. Class C Texas Driver's License Class "C" Water Distribution License or the ability to obtain within 6 months KNOWLEDGE or SKILL PROFICIENCIES: Ability to interact with the public regarding service orders, complaints, and concerns. Ability to make decisions efficiently with minimal supervision. Ability to communicate in a professional and mature manner. Flexibility to be on call after normal work hours on a rotational basis. WORKING CONDITIONS: Position requires heavy lifting (e.g., greater than 50 pounds) and extended period of sitting, walking, and standing. Position incumbent is constantly exposed to dirt, dust, noise, heat, cold and dampness and occasionally exposed to odors, fumes, and bad lighting. Job may require above-average agility and dexterity. Job may also require physical exertion for long periods of time. Mostly of workday is spent outside. Incumbent is exposed to all types of weather conditions .
