Responsibilities: This position reports to the Wortham Curator of Latin American Art and encompasses the full scope of activities, function, and special projects of the Department of Latin American Art, including collections, exhibitions, and long-range planning. Permanent Collection Provides accessions information for quarterly Sub-committee and Collections committee agendas and/or presentations; prepares Power Point presentations. Creates and maintains collection files in both digital and analog formats Conducts research and gathers documentation in support of new acquistions; establishes contact with colleagues, artists, galleries, and collectors as needed Works with departmental and ICAA staff in inventory of artists for Latino Art Fund initiative Coordinates photography of works in permanent collection Responsible for maintaining and updating object information in TMS Responsible for all object movement, conservation, and shipping requests Participates in general curatorial discussions related to museum-wide Collection Data Standards and applies standards to TMS collection records Works with Curator and Assistant Curator on all publications pertaining to the Permanent Collection Exhibitions Works with Curator and Assistant Curator on all exhibition projects, including: preparation and update of exhibition checklist and loan forms (with Registrar's office); gathering contact information for lenders and acting as a liaison with them as necesssary; catalogue research and production Coordinates traveling exhibitions (with Registrar's office) Prepares and proofs didactic texts and object labels (with Learning and Interpretation and Publications Department); installs exhibition labels Coordinates with Conservation department the examination of works to be included in exhibitions, whether in-house or on loan Provides information on artists and works in in-house or temporary exhibitions to Development Department for grant-writing purposes Works with education department and/or community groups on related programming Leads tours and informal talks on exhibitions Websites Contributes to and maintains the Department's presence on the MFAH website Collaborates with the ICAA team in the creation of a special website for the Adolpho Leirner Collection of Brazilian Constructive Art Additional activities Works with the Curator and Assistant Curator in the organization of the Department's bi-annual Latin American Experience Gala and Auction; acts as liaison with artists, dealers, collectors and special guests as needed; travels to represent the Department in art fairs or other promotional events as needed Works with the Curator and Assistant Curator in organizing the activities of the Latin Maecenas, the department's patron group. Attends the group's events and programs. Ocasional docent training, public lectures, and private tours related to departmental projects, as well as assisting both the general and scholarly public requiring information on or access to the Latin American collection. Establishing and maintaining contacts with the Latino arts community both in and outside Houston and keeping current with new scholarship in this area are also considered high priorities. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: A thorough grounding in 20th-Century Latin American and Latino art history and critical writing, and a general knowledge of contemporary art Excellent research, writing and communication skills Attention to detail, good organization skills, computer/word processing experience required (PC word processing, PowerPoint, Excel, and database) Capable of setting priorities and working with minimal supervision Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with various departments of the museum essential Proficiency in both Spanish and English is a requirement; proficiency in Portuguese is desirable An enthusiasm for the museum profession, the ability to work collaboratively, and to approach a broad range of tasks with a positive outlook Education and Experience: M.A. in Latin American and/or Latino art history required 2-3 years museum experience in curatorial or museum research is also highly desirable Equal Opportunities for All At the MFAH, we believe that diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusivity are fundamental to our organization.
